The Raider Math and Writing Centers kicked off the 2019-2020 school year with grand openings at Riverwood International Charter School. Unique to Fulton County and modeled after similar centers offered in collegiate settings, these two centers provide tutoring in math and writing for Riverwood’s nearly 1800 students. Each center is designed to enhance the learning experience and improve academic performance for students in grades 9-12. Combined, the centers offer nearly 70 tutors and each center plans to conduct at least 1500 tutoring sessions this year.
The Raider Writing Center opened in 2015 and is led by Language Arts teacher Christy Toledano, who conceptualized and created the center.. Tutors are accepted after applying for limited tutor positions each fall. The Writing Center receives support from Kennesaw State University who host a training session each fall for Riverwood tutors. Tutors are trained using the Bedford Guide for Writing which helps students establish individual tutoring techniques. The Writing Center supports all students with writing assignments across the entire school curriculum including creative writing, general writing for all academic coursework, and non-school assignments such as reviewing college essays or letters to the editor.
Ms. Toledano shares, “In the Writing Center, we are dedicated to tutoring every Riverwood student, offering creative and engaging writing workshops, and celebrating and promoting creative writing through our literary magazine, The Glaive.”
Modeled after the Writing Center, the Math Center opened in 2018 and is led by Riverwood Math teacher, Laura Taylor. Math tutors are 11th and 12th grade students who are selected based upon an application and recommendations from two math teachers. Math Center tutors attended training at Georgia State University. Student-directed tutoring is provided for all math subjects – Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calc, Calculus, Statistics and AP Statistics, SAT/ACT, and IB SL and HL Math — as well as in Chemistry, Physics and Economics.
“In the second year of the math center, we have already completed over 650 tutoring sessions! Students are coming back day after day because of the inviting personalities and the quality of help they are receiving from their tutors. We are well on our way to our goal of 1500 sessions for the school year!” said Laura Taylor.
These centers are made possible by support from the Riverwood Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and the Riverwood Foundation, who purchased supplies and fund teacher and student training. The Math and Writing Centers are open every school day during lunch as well as every Wednesday morning before school.
