The Raider Writing Center opened its doors for the fourth year in September 2018 with peer tutors even more prepared than ever. In addition to the annual fall workshop at Kennesaw State University’s Writing Center attended by the new and returning tutors, a select group also went to a Journalism and Literary Magazine Camp this summer. Accompanied by Language Arts Teacher Christy Toledano, who founded and leads the Raider Writing Center, students Lucy Howard, Maddy Nagley, Tayler Lundell, Ella Ponsell, Hope Talton, Hannah York, Shane Kleber, and Sam Shir spent part of their summer vacation at the University of North Carolina.
Inspired by the summer camp at Chapel Hill, the students set a goal to publish an online newspaper/literature magazine featuring student writing this year. Says Toledano, “We are excited to offer new writing opportunities for all of our Riverwood students.” Toledano plans on offering more workshop sessions this year and will continue to host the ever popular annual poetry slam and many other fun writing activities each month.
Last school year, the Writing Center provided more than 1,300 individual tutoring sessions. The center also offered Wednesday morning workshops in AP World, AP US History, and 10th grade Honors English. With the aim to support all Riverwood students with any writing assignment in any class and to assist with any other writing task, the tutors also help with college essays, letters to the editor, and creative writing. The Center is open every school day during lunch as well as every Wednesday morning before school.
At this time, the Raider Writing Center is the only one of its kind operating in Fulton County Schools. In addition to the partnership with Kennesaw State University, which hosts the annual fall training sessions, both the Riverwood PTSA and the Riverwood Foundation provide funding to the Writing Center. Realizing the critical need for sustained support, the PTSA added a dedicated line-item to their annual operating budget several years ago. The Foundation provided funding for Toledano to attend the Summer 2018 Journalism and Literary Magazine Camp at UNC Chapel Hill.
